Weekly Update 8

I am so bad at this.

Wow am I bad at this. Forming (and breaking) habits is not my specialty so please bear with me. Anyways here is what I’ve been up to these past few weeks.

Unmotivated Reader

Haven’t picked up a book in a while (no surprise). Does reading fan fiction count? I re-read a few of my favourites, but does re-reading really count? Anyways yeah I haven’t picked up a book in a few weeks, which is disappointing, but I’ll try to be better.

This Week in Television

*Spoilers for The Defenders and Game of Thrones ahead

First of all, I’m still emotionally fragile from that Defenders ending. I knew that they weren’t going to kill off Daredevil like that, but I stilled sobbed inconsolably until he showed up again. Also can we all stop for a minute to talk about Danny Rand? I never watched Iron Fist because of the not-so-stellar reviews, but never could I have anticipated THAT. I broke out into hysterical laughter every time he said ‘I am the immortal Iron Fist’ or when he tried to explain asian concepts. I just wanted him to stop. What a disappointment that they didn’t cast an asian man in the role. I think it would’ve been much more interesting and a lot less grating. Aside from that, it was still so cool to see all these heroes interact with each other. I loved seeing the interaction between all the non-superpowered friends as well. Really just a treat overall. I’m looking forward to see if they make more appearances in each others’ respective shows in the future. (Also shoutout to The Dig, whose music makes TWO appearances on the show. So Proud!)

So tonight is the Game of Thrones season 7 finale. I’m just going to be a ball of nerves the whole time. This season went by so quick and I don’t want it to end. The episode from last week has me so anxious and conflicted it’s kind of ridiculous. I’m so sad to see Arya and Sansa in conflict. I really like both of them, but Arya’s reaction to the note is so disappointing. Like how could she not understand that Sansa was young and scared? It just doesn’t make sense to me. Also the whole dragon becoming a white walker was SPOILED for me by some asshole tweeting about looking at the eclipse without glasses on. (Ok I know I was late to watching the episode, but that’s because I was busy ok?) I think it made me more anxious going into it knowing that was going to happen. I’m still very conflicted on Danaerys’ and Jon’s impending relationship. I can see the romance happening, but I also know about R+L=J and I cannot condone incest. I know they don’t know it, but I’m still so uneasy about it. This is Game of Thrones so it’s definitely going to happen and I like the idea of them together, but I will never be 100% on board.

Last night, I went to see a movie out on the lawn of a historic mansion in Bozeman. The movie was called A River Runs Through It. It has Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young child and a twenty-something Brad Pitt, which is always a nice sight. The movie is about fly-fishing in Montana in the early 1900s so it’s about as interesting as it sounds. It was still a cool experience to be enjoying a movie out in open air instead of watching the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight that’s for sure.

Have a great week! Good luck to all my GoT fans.

The Smell of Smoke on the Air

Hello my lovely readers! Sorry about not doing my weekly update this week. My best friend came to visit me and we went camping so no wifi. Anyways, due to the smoke in the air caused by wildfires all over Montana, I’ve been feeling nostalgic so I thought I would talk about what weird things give me nostalgia.

The Smell of Smoke

Growing up, some of my most cherished memories include camping out in the wilds of California. My favourite part was sitting around the fire with family and friends and stuffing myself with s’mores. The smell also reminds me of the bonfires I went to in my teens. Some of my best birthday parties were held under the stars enveloped in the warmth of a roaring fire. They were times of stupidity and merriment that I will always cherish. On a weirder note though, the smell also reminds me of fall in California. I remember starting the first grade and we were moving to a new neighbourhood and school as these massive wildfires roared through northern San Diego. Since then, I have associated the smell of smoke in the air to the start of autumn and new beginnings.

The Smell of a Certain Brand of Lipgloss

I wish, for the life of me, I could remember the brand of the lipgloss. It belonged to my mom and the smell always reminds me of where my love for makeup comes from. The smell also reminds me of France. Maybe it was a french brand or my mom wore it when we lived there, but either it has such strong connections to my childhood. I wish I could find it again.

There are some songs that bring back such fond memories and periods of time for me. Title and Registration by Death Cab for Cutie is one of those songs. To be honest anything by Death Cab is nostalgic for me. I started listening to them at the tail-end of my emo phase after going through Never Shout Never and All Time Low, I slowly made my way into emo indie music which honestly changed my life. This Death Cab song in particular reminds me of a friendship that I formed back then and bond we formed over our shared love of music. It reminds me of times when I thought I was deep and emotional for listening to songs about heartbreak that I didn’t understand (and still don’t to be honest). I also recently saw Blind Pilot in concert. One Red Thread plagued all of my pandora playlists and was on my top ten most played songs on my ipod for a long time. They were incredible live, and it reminded me so much of being 13 and my first forays into indie music. Gosh what a time that was for me.

Anyways, I just wanted to share with you how I was feeling recently and I would describe that feeling as hella nostalgic. What about you? I would love to hear what makes you feel nostalgic!

Weekly Update 7

I have way too much time on my hands.

Hello dedicated following (all 2 of you)! It is once again Sunday so I shall give you a rundown of everything I watched/read/listened to because I don’t have an active social life.

And she finished another book!

The Girl From Everywhere was so good! I know time traveling pirates are kind of a niche genre, it has to be my second favourite niche genre behind reimagined Russian fairytales with badass heroines (I’m referring specifically to Uprooted by Naomi Novik). I actually got it based off  a review on NPR because I’ve read some crappy books that came highly recommended by Goodreads users and Kirkus. I think I might be alone in this, but I decided to read The Magicians by Lev Grossman because of Kirkus and I did not like it at all. I have yet to find a reviewer that I can trust completely, but I’m also unaware of what is out there, so if you have any recommendations, feel free to leave a comment!

She watched so much tv

I’ve been bouncing between shows because I have the attention span of fly. I started watching The Flash. It’s actually pretty good, but I’m so upset that the villain is once again a conventionally handsome middle-aged white man who lost his wife early on in life. I have so much beef with Arrow and the continued presence of Malcolm Merlyn. Don’t get me wrong, I love John Barrowman, but I’m so annoyed that Merlyn hasn’t faced the ending he deserves. It’s just annoying at this point. Don’t even get me started on the fact that no one on these shows stay dead. I really can’t handle it sometimes.

I started watching True Blood and two episodes in I started laughing so hard I sounded hysterical. Everything about the show is just over the top and the brooding vampire just pushed me over the edge. I’m so over it, I don’t know why I even tried to watch it. I bet I could get hooked into it easily, but it’s just too much and after watching Alexander Skarsgård in Big Little Lies, I don’t know if I can watch him in this show.

I also started The Man in the High Castle and this show is incredible! It’s suspenseful and such an intriguing premise. I like that the stakes are so high and you can really feel how high the stakes are. I look forward to binging the crap out of this show!

Weekly Update 6

Jade turns 20!

Hello everyone! I would apologise for the delay, but my birthday celebrations supersede everything else in my life. Work? Nah it’s my birthday. Budgeting? It’s my birthday so I get to treat myself. Diet? Psh everyone knows that birthday calories don’t count. Anyways this week was full of interesting stuff that I read/watched/listened to.

Where is she from? Everywhere.

You guessed it. I started reading the YA time travel fantasy The Girl From Everywhere. The day I bought it, I read 330 pages. Jade’s binging habits are back! What a fun and refreshing read. The book follows Nix, a 16 year old whose father can sail to distant times and lands both real and fantastical as long as he has the right map. He has been fixated on returning to a time before Nix’s mom dies so he can be with the love of his life. This threatens to change Nix’s life completely, which could possibly cause her current self to be erased from history. A good portion of the book so far has taken place in Victorian era Hawaii and it’s such a rich, beautiful, and complex setting for this story. I love Nix. She is such an interesting character and her struggles are so complicated, you can’t help but feel for her in her situation. Definitely pick it up if you love adventure, time travel, history, and a little bit of piracy!

What hasn’t she watched?

Wow, where to start? I’ve watched so much this week so I guess I’ll start with the most ridiculous.

Arrow season 3. Oh my lord. What a roller coaster. This show has been on a steady decline since its first season not gonna lie. The cherry on top of this mess of a season? It has to be the forced marriage trope. I laughed so hard watching it. It wasn’t meant to be funny, but it sure was silly. Also does anyone actually ever die on this show? Like I’m not even sad when people die because they’re more likely to come back than the people who exit the show without dying. I’m currently debating whether to finish the next two seasons. I don’t know if I have it in me.

On a very different note, I finished Big Little Lies at the beginning of the week and I’m still shook. What a heart-wrenching and fitting ending to a great miniseries. If you haven’t watched it yet, start it this instant!

I went to the movies this week to see Dunkirk. So I’m a fan of Christopher Nolan’s work, but I didn’t have the highest expectations for his foray into historical war cinema, but was I wrong. I was blown away by the beautiful cinematography and minimalist feel. Even knowing how the story ends, I was on edge the whole movie. Hans Zimmer once again creates an exquisite and fitting film score. Also I think I’m in love with Jack Lowden so there’s that.

I also went to a play/vaudeville on my birthday. I spent the day in Virginia City, Montana, a historical town that has a beautiful old opera house where the Virginia City Players put on a show and vaudeville act during the summers. The play was Robin Hood, which was charming in its humor and handmade stage props. The vaudeville portion had me laughing so hard I was crying. I would highly recommend going to anyone who finds themselves in southwest Montana!

Also what a way to top off my birthday with new Game of Thrones AND Rick and Morty. Both shows give me life! Too bad I have to watch them week to week instead of all at once. That’s the best way to watch anything!

Weekly Update 5

Jade discovers the joys of HBO

I come to you after an exhausting day exploring Yellowstone (I’ll post about that later). I’m still recuperating from 9 miles of hiking, a mild sunburn, and too many bug bites. While I’m recovering, I can still talk to you about what I have read/watched/listened to this week.

HBO is my saving grace

Well I finally watched Game of Thrones! Wow, what a great start to the season. From the intense opening scene to the last lines uttered as a promise for the game to finally begin, I was enamored. I was so happy to have the show back that I didn’t care about Ed Sheeran’s random cameo. I don’t really understand all the people who were so upset to see him in Westeros. He’s probably one of the more high-profile musicians to make an appearance on the show, which was a bit jarring I’ll admit, but It’s not something to get up in arms about. Some other standout moments for me were when the writers threw in a jab at man buns and when Euron Greyjoy shaded Jaime Lannister hardcore. That was hilarious.

Another standout HBO show I started this week was Big Little Lies. Now that is a great show! I’m concerned at how much I relate to Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon) considering I’m not a mom and I’m only 19. I love her pettiness and her fierce love for her family. She can be a bit overbearing sometimes, but she is still amazing. What I love about this show is that it portrays these women as multi-faceted and sympathetic, even though they can be real catty with each other. Definitely worth a watch!

Did she read?

No she didn’t. I don’t really have an excuse for why, but that’s the case. I will be starting a new book soon though, so I don’t need your judgement.

Songs of the Week

Tired of Love (acoustic) – The Dig

Breaking the Habit – Linkin Park (RIP Chester Bennington)

I hope you all have a lovely week! This time next week I will be turning 20 so I might not have a post on Sunday, but I’ll make sure to have one up on Monday.

Weekly Update 3

Jade finally finished a book!

Things have been looking up this week! I went camping for the 4th of July and made some of the absolute best s’mores on the planet! Turns out my aunt’s husband is a regional administrator for the EPA so we had some really interesting talks about the current state of the government, but I won’t get into that because it would just become a rant and that’s not the format of this post. Anyways, I hope you all had an excellent week! Here’s what I read/watched/listened to:

To be honest, I didn’t expect to watch this, but I saw a few clips and I was hooked. I’ve been following Alison Brie since her time on Community so I guess I would have watched it eventually. I’m glad I watched it right away! What an amazing show! I never thought I would be into wrestling, but I was all there for it. It’s funny and heartwarming and just downright entertaining. I love the 80s aesthetic and this was the pinnacle of everything amazing about the music and fashion (those bodysuits though) of the decade! I also really appreciated every single character and the close bond the women shared. My favourite character was Sheila. It’s so refreshing to see such a diverse cast of women develop close friendships with each other, especially one involving wrestling. There’s no real emphasis on romance, instead on the real relationships formed between all the characters. A real highlight for me was Bash’s friendship with Carmen. It was so incredibly sweet and heartwarming! I would highly recommend this show to anyone.

Spider-Man Homecoming

What a movie! After watching Tom Holland in Civil War, I just knew that this movie would be entertaining. He is such a great Peter Parker/Spider-Man! Also how nice it is not having to see uncle Ben  die for a third time. Origin stories get boring once you’ve seen them multiple times. Also thank god for no Green Goblin. He’s just annoying at this point. While the movie doesn’t pass the bechdel test (which I mean come on it’s 2017, women are real people who have friends and talk about important things that aren’t men) Zendaya had the most memorable scene-stealing role of the movie. Give her more lines guys! Anyways, it’s a highly entertaining superhero film that is also a good teen drama if I’ve ever seen one (I’ve seen plenty btw). It’s definitely worth a watch!

Our Dark Duet (finally)

I did it! I finished it! I came, I saw, I cried (a lot). V.E. Schwab has knack for giving me endings that I might not always want, but endings that I definitely need. I just wish she would write more stories about the rise, fall, and aftermath of Verity and the rest of the alternate United States she sets up in this duology. God do I love duologies. It almost feels weird stopping at two when most YA series can go on from trilogies to 12+ books (I’m looking at you House of Night series). It just becomes too much sometimes. Anyways, this series was very original and I’m sad to see it end. I’ve been thinking of starting Good Omens by Neil Gaiman now. I read the first few pages in the library and it’s already hilarious. We’ll see.

Weekly Update 2

Guess who finally watched Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World!

Happy (nearly) 4th of July everyone! July is my favourite month! Summer’s in full swing, it’s finally consistently hot, and it’s my birth month. Let’s be honest, our favourite seasons and months are always the ones that were born in. Really looking forward to this month! Anyways, here is what I read/watched/listened to this week.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World

Don’t kill me for this one, but I watched this film for the first time ever this week. I don’t know why it took me this long to be honest, but whatever. I’ve seen it now and I love it. I mean for one thing the cast is incredible! Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, Michael Cera (and way more) all in one movie! How? Can this happen again? Soon please? I really love the style and message of the film. It was satisfying and thoroughly entertaining! If you haven’t seen it yet (I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who took this long) please do yourself a favour and put it on the top of your watch list.

The Dark Duet (shocker)

Yep that’s right. I haven’t finished it yet because I have a bad habit of being sucked into the internet for hours doing absolutely nothing. I did read a few hundred more pages though. I’m starting to get more into it, but now I have family in town and I’ve been put on babysitting duty which is exhausting and time-consuming. I barely have time to myself right now. I will persevere though and finish it by next week (I swear).

Songs of the Week

Definitely slightly obsessed with Brie Larson singing in Scott Pilgrim.

Young Folks – City of the Sun

Benine Redux – STRFKR

4th of July – The Dig

Have a great (and safe) 4th of July!
